Our namesake active duty Marine Corps unit, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, is currently serving in Darwin, Australia, as the “Marine Rotational Force – Darwin,” and should return to CONUS in October 2014, if all goes according to plan.

Since the beginning of the Wars Against Terror in the Middle East, 1/5 has been deployed six (6) times – three 7-months tours in Iraq, and three 7-month tours in Afghanistan – during which time they were very successful in accomplishing their missions, under very challenging and complex circumstances.
